Berlin plans to rebuild the palace that represents some of Germanys most inglorious history. Andrew McCathie tries to find out why.
Bernd Mueller is not waiting for the slow wheels of German political life to start work on rebuilding the Kaisers palace in Berlin. More than half a century after East Germanys communist masters demolished the so-called Stadtschloss and just weeks after the German Parliament decided to reconstruct the 17th-century palace, the 70-year-old Mueller began laying his own foundations for the building which, in a sense, will be the crowning glory of Berlins reconstruction over the past 12 years.
